A brain surgeon, also called a neurosurgeon, diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. Neurosurgeons work closely with other medical professionals to plan each procedure based on a patient’s specific condition. These specialists perform delicate operations to remove tumors, repair damaged blood vessels, and relieve pressure caused by injury or disease. Their training covers both surgical techniques and the complex anatomy of the nervous system, allowing them to address a range of neurological concerns. Here’s information on different types of brain surgery for traumatic injuries and conditions:

Brain Injuries

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an external force impacts the head, leading to damage to the brain. This can happen during events such as falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, or assaults. Brain surgery may become necessary following a TBI if there is substantial damage or complications that threaten the patient’s life or long-term health. TBIs range in severity from mild, such as concussions, to severe, which may involve prolonged unconsciousness or significant cognitive impairments.

Symptoms can vary widely and may include headaches, confusion, memory loss, or even changes in vision or mood. A neurosurgeon evaluates imaging studies, such as CT or MRI scans, alongside the patient’s symptoms to determine the best course of treatment. Early intervention in such cases is invaluable to prevent further damage and optimize recovery outcomes. Conditions requiring surgical intervention include significant swelling in the brain, blood clots (hematomas), or skull fractures that press on brain tissue.

Brain Tumors

Brain tumors form when abnormal cells grow within or near the brain. Some tumors are benign, while others are malignant. Neurosurgeons often recommend surgery to remove or reduce the size of these growths, but the approach depends on the tumor’s location, size, and type. The length of brain surgery depends on the condition being treated.

A straightforward procedure may take a few hours, while a complex tumor removal near sensitive brain structures can last longer. Factors that influence surgical time include the tumor’s location, its size, and how close it sits to vital areas that control speech, movement, or vision. Surgeons may also use imaging technology during the operation, and this can extend the total time in the operating room.

Glioblastoma

Glioblastoma is a tumor that grows in the tissue of the brain; it tends to develop quickly and can spread into surrounding areas. Because of this, neurosurgeons often aim to remove as much of the tumor as possible while protecting healthy tissue. Surgery for glioblastoma is frequently combined with additional treatments coordinated by a broader medical team.

Meningioma

Meningioma develops in the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, but many of these tumors grow slowly. Meningiomas may not cause symptoms for some time. When treatment is needed, neurosurgeons evaluate the tumor’s position to determine the safest surgical approach. Removal can be more challenging when the meningioma sits close to blood vessels or nerves.

Brain Aneurysms

A brain aneurysm is a weak, bulging area in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. If this weakened spot ruptures, it can lead to bleeding that requires immediate medical attention. Neurosurgeons treat aneurysms using different methods, and the chosen technique depends on the size and location of the affected vessel. One common approach involves placing a small clip at the base of the aneurysm to stop blood flow into the bulge. Another method uses tiny coils inserted through a catheter to fill the aneurysm and reduce the risk of rupture.

Learn More About Brain Surgery

Brain surgery encompasses many procedures, each designed to address a specific neurological condition. Whether the concern involves a tumor, an aneurysm, or a nerve disorder, neurosurgeons rely on careful planning and advanced techniques for surgery. To learn more about your surgical options, contact a neurosurgeon for a consultation. A trained specialist can review your medical history, explain the available approaches, and answer the questions that matter most to you.
