When To Be Concerned About Moles

Many people have moles, and they are typically harmless clusters of pigment cells. A mole might appear flat or raised, and its color ranges from tan to dark brown. When a mole starts to change, you want to pay closer attention to it. This is when you should be concerned about a suspicious mole:

Irregular Borders

Healthy moles typically have smooth, even edges. Notched or blurry borders may signal a problem, and you might notice the outline looks scalloped. When the edge fades into the surrounding skin without a clear line, that mole requires a closer look.

Look at your moles under good lighting once a month. If you spot uneven edges that were not there before, note the date and location. A ragged border stands out, and comparing new photos to older ones helps you track changes.

Asymmetrical Shape

Symmetry offers a useful clue about a mole. If you draw an imaginary line through the middle, both halves of a normal mole match closely. When one half looks different from the other, the mole is asymmetrical, and that shape warrants attention.

A round or oval mole is common, but a lopsided one falls outside the typical pattern. Watch for shapes that seem to spread unevenly, since that change matters. You want to compare each side carefully.

The edges of a typical mole are smooth, even, and defined. If the borders appear jagged or blurred, it could be a warning sign of something unusual. Uneven edges may indicate that the mole is growing unpredictably, and this is why careful observation is necessary.

Increased Size

Size gives you another measurement worth tracking. Most benign moles stay smaller than a pencil eraser, and this is roughly six millimeters across. When a mole grows past that width, or keeps expanding month after month, you want to have it examined.

Growth by itself does not confirm cancer, and many moles shift slightly over the years. Still, rapid changes stand out from slow, steady ones. Keep an eye on these signs:

  • Wider than six millimeters
  • Steady growth over a few weeks
  • Raised area that was once flat
  • New moles appearing after age 30

Itchy Moles

An itchy mole is not always a warning, but it deserves your notice. Occasional itching happens from dry skin or friction, and clothing rubs against raised spots. When the itch lingers or returns to the same mole, that pattern points to something worth checking.

If you have bleeding, crusting, or tenderness, this raises the concern further. A mole that oozes or scabs without an injury falls outside normal behavior, and you want a professional to review it. Track any of these symptoms:

  • Itching in one spot
  • Bleeding without a clear cause
  • Crusting, oozing, or scaling
  • Touching causes pain

Write down when symptoms start so you have a clear record. This information helps a clinician understand the timeline, and details make the visit more productive. Small notes about the changes support a faster review.

Get Moles Checked for Cancer

No single warning sign confirms skin cancer, and only a trained professional makes that diagnosis. When you notice any of these changes, you want an expert to take a look. Schedule a skin exam if you have spotted a changing mole. Call a dermatology clinic today to book an appointment, and bring notes about any symptoms you have tracked.
